Obviously, gotta get to work.
RE situational un-awareness: Had a coworker comment that something flashed behind his car and there was a boom. He thunk "huh" and continued driving to work. We told him it was PSA flight 182 and pointed out the smoke column.
Between driving, fumbling with their coffee, cellphone, listening to the podcast of the day, or talking to folks at work, they don't have time to pay attention to unimportant stuff, like life-threatening fires.
