It seems that every time the Stupid Party gets stupid, every would-be pundit in the world trots out their thoughts on the incident at hand. Why should I be any different?
As best I recall, every time the Republicans lose their control of the government through mismanagement, misadventure or both, the factions within the party start catfighting. Monday morning quarterbacking becomes the popular pastime. Prognostication becomes the favorite topic of everyone on either side. Again, why should I be different?
The favorite whipping boy is the war against Iran. Personally, I think the war has been a mixed bag. We have set Iran back, hard, on their quest to obtain nuclear weapons. This is a Good Thing. Even during the darkest days of the Cold War, no one with a lick of sense actually wanted to use the damn things. But the nutjobs in control of Iran will be perfectly happy to use them, just as long as they can kill a lot of us infidels. They don’t care if they die in the process or pull the entire world down with them. It’s far too dangerous to allow people like this to own their own personal genie.
It’s also set back the Chinese quest to take over Taiwan and the rest of the First Island Chain. This is also a Good Thing. If we ever needed a policy of “containment”. it’s with the Chinese, at least until demographic changes contain then for us.
The price has been steep. $4+ gas, $6 diesel, higher prices across the board. It’s complicated ending the war in Ukraine. It’s using up our already depleted stocks of weaponry even faster than the Ukrainians had managed. It cost the Republicans the election and has likely placed a group of socialists in control. Europe is our future unless we boot them out in 2028, and they’re going to use every lever of power they can reach in order to keep that from happening.
As I’ve aged and my health has failed to hold up as it once did, I’ve come to the conclusion that if things get all Mad Maxy, we’ll die. I’ll take some of them with me, but we’ll die. But there are things I can still do to help us out in less dire straits. It’s time to get on those. If you have such a list, I suggest you see to it.
The next couple of years are going to be very interesting. Don’t be surprised if those in control or those seeking control don’t pull the pillars of the temple down on our heads before that period is over. Why put off until tomorrow what you can accomplish today?
OK, I’m dense and I don’t get politics: how has war with Iran impaired China it its quest to take over Taiwan and, well, all of us?
Gas is expensive but the oil companies are making record profit. that don’t seem neighborly. Why aren’t they getting called out for price gouging?
As for being too old to survive the possible upcoming nonsense: yeah, me too. If I could do without sleep and my meds, I’d be set for a reasonable time. I hope I don’t have to eat the cat as I really like her.
