Fine Art Tuesday is on Wednesday this week

Over The Top, John Nash, 1918

It’s been a weird week so far, and promises to stay that way. I won’t be able to post tomorrow, so I’m taking advantage of the conjunction of a Fine Art Tuesday and Veterans’ Day, marking both in this single post.

Painted by artist John Nash (1893-1977), Over The Top is an officially commissioned work that depicts the 1st Artists’ Rifles involvement in an attack on the morning of 30th December, 1917, at Welsh Ridge, near Marcoing (south west of Cambrai).

Nash had no formal artistic training, but became a wll-known painter of English landscapes. Art historian Eric Newton once said “If I wanted a foreigner to understand the mood of a typical English landscape, I would show him Nash’s best watercolours.” Nash was also a print maker of some repute.

As with so many men who had witnessed the brutality of World War I, Nash’s experiences colored his art and much of his life after the war. Some of his art has been characterized as dark and brooding. In later years, even after being recalled to service during World War II, it seems that he finally made some peace with his experiences and his work lightened somewhat.

Note: Fine Art Tuesday was started by Eaton Rapids Joe in memory of Ol’ Remus, late proprietor of  the Woodpile Report. If you’re a blogger and are so moved, please feel free to join us with your own Fine Art Tuesday post.
