If we can believe this UK think tank, should we experience a truly global problem, or perhaps even if we had a quick succession of things we’ve seen in recent years (earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricane etc.), the global economy has a week until it starts to break down.
Even smaller, regional problems have profound consequences, as they point out. Volcanic eruptions in Iceland paralyzed air travel to, from and within Europe in 2010, and nearly bankrupted some airlines.
This situation can be blamed on many things, from a poor economy that has lead businesses everywhere to cut to the point of mediocrity to a global “just in time” system. Heck, just to be politically correct, we even can throw in “climate change”. 🙂 They do.
While I wouldn’t take their prediction to the bank, it’s worth thinking about in your planning process. Many folks still expect to make that “one last trip” to the grocery store, the gas station, Walmart or wherever. If you do it very early on (“Honey, California just had a big earthquake; I’m going to clean out the grocery store!”) it could work, but what about 4-5 days into this week period, when even (or especially) Joe and Jane Sheeple have figured out that something’s amiss and, together with everyone else in their subdivision, are swarming to closest shopping center like hungry locusts? Angry, hungry, scared and probably armed locusts?
Yeah. That’s going to be an interesting day.
Do it now–stock up on everything you can. Buy the food you eat, just in greater quantities. Fill those water containers, Buy an extra pack of batteries or box of ammo. If nothing else, you’ll use it all eventually, and there’s a decent chance it will ever be as inexpensive as it is now. The inflation monster is still lurking, as is the specter of wars in various unfortunate locals. Unemployment may be down (and I think it’s simply more people giving up the hunt, perhaps even joining the underground economy), but it sure seems that there are more people out there without full time jobs than ever.
But I wouldn’t wait. A week can go by very quickly.
