Nanny is looking out for you

And that’s the problem, at least for those of us who believe that Nanny needs to go mind her own freakin’ business and leave us alone.

News.com is reporting that the Congress is targeting new legislation at “social networking sites”. Basically, this legislation, promoted by the Dark-and-Creepy-Wing of the Republican Party, would require that libraries and schools would have to block access to these sites. However, the proposed law is so poorly drafted that is may also require blocking of instant messaging, blogging sites and other categories as yet unforeseen.

Now I know that kids go online and divulge personal information to strangers that they shouldn’t. Then again, they were doing this 30 years ago over the telephone, so it isn’t anything new. It’s a stupid thing to do, but the nature of kids is to do things that adults find stupid. We used to call that “growing up”.

We don’t need a law to fix this. What we need are parents who aren’t so self-absorbed that they can’t be bothered to pay attention to what their kids are doing. (“Honey, when did Little Princess get her belly button pierced? Oh, and did we give her money to buy those slutty rags she’s wearing?” Gr-r-r-r.)

Go away, Nanny.
