Modern Country isn’t Country. It’s Pop with a cowboy hat.
I grew up listening to some Country, but was never a fan. Much later in life, I started to appreciate it – the old stuff, Ernest Tubb, Eddie Arnold, Johnny Cash.
The embrace of Jelly Roll as “Country” demonstrates the vacuous character of the music biz as well as anything else. So now we have one “County” star with face tats, and another putting a rap into one of his tunes, and covering “Fast Car”, which is a song that sucked when it first hit the airwaves. Lyle Lovett is more country than any of those.
Meanwhile, artists with real talent, in what some would call the “roots” movement, get nothing from the big music industry.
If there are any decent performers in modern country, I don’t know about them. I’m sure not going to slog through all the mud in the hopes of finding an acorn. Besides which, I’m much more interested in listening to Classical and Jazz these days.
