Be an optimist

One downside to being a prepper sort of person is that you become something of a pessimist. It’s hard not to when you spend time thinking about and getting ready for Bad Things to happen. It’s all too easy to let your concerns about the economy leak into your overall worldview. Sort of an occupational hazard, I suppose.

One antidote is to deliberately seek out good news. Positive stories, be they as small as a note on Reddit about someone rescuing a cat or a dog or as large as world-changing technologies that have the potential to make that science fiction future come true. (The Star Trek TOS one, not the post DS-9 ones.)

One thing I like to read weekly is the Rational Optimist Society‘s newsletter. Every week I get a dose of technology-centric positivity in my inbox. Recently I got one that is really a distillation of last several months’ worth of newsletters. Well worth a read.

Does this turn me into PollyAnna? Hardly. The world is still a big, dangerous place. But it helps to know that it isn’t all dangerous, and that there are people out there who are doing the heavy lifting of making the world better, one bright idea at a time.
